What regulations apply when checking in a rifle stock as checked luggage in the US?

I am thinking about buying a rifle stock and bringing it home from the United States, however, I can't seem to get a clear answer if a rifle stock is considered as a firearm component by the TSA. Do I have to follow all TSA regulations regarding transporting firearms, or can I just leave it in my checked in luggage without any more hle?
