Does a 1994 plymouth acclaim require synthetic oil?

I was told by someone I need synthetic blend. I am confused. I have been putting 5w30 regular oil in and was having oil leakage and smelling of oil problems. I started using the blend. I had not driven my car in about 3 mo due to traveling, came back and added regular oil to it from forgetting. What kind of oil does it take.
